Beginning last night, Merida celebrates its heritage with nightly activities at the Plaza de la Independencia known simply as The Grande Plaza. In the middle of the Centro, or the historic part of town, the most prominent building is a cathedral built by the Spanish from the stones of the Maya structures they destroyed after they conquered the Mayan people.

To the left of the cathedral is the seat of government offices for the state of Yucatan. Inside on the walls are large murals painted by Fernando Castro Pacheco depicting the history of the region, and the struggles of the native Mayan people.
