We have really enjoyed our time here in Merida. We play a while and then rest a while as life here really does move at a slower pace. Susan, however, takes art lessons twice weekly with a local artist, originally from Argentina, working with faces in charcoal. The week before her lessons began, she walked around the city asking local residents if she could take their picture, explaining her interest in art, and most were very happy to oblige. Below is her first completed drawing. As you can see, she is really talented.

We usually spend from 4:00-6:00 p.m., mas o menos, on the terrace for our cocktail hour. Sometimes at dusk we see a few bats flitter by. Apparently some of the bats came down from Texas as one had a "Keep Austin Weird" sticker on his wing. La buena vida!
It's not all easy living, though; we have to walk two blocks to take our laundry to the lavanderia once a week. Victor, who can speak no English, patiently helps us work through the process. The laundry is weighed (see the laundry basket attached to the scale), and we pay by the kilo. We drop the dirty clothes off around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m., and he has them washed, dried, and folded for us to pick up at 6:00 p.m. Pretty good deal for about 100 pesos, or less than $10. One day he had not finished our laundry when we came by to pick it up, so he delivered it to our door about an hour later. Wonderful, friendly people providing service with a smile.
