Traditional Yucatan Dancing

Domingo (Sunday) in Merida is a day of celebration every week.  The Grande Plaza is open with vendors from 8:30 to 5:30 with special programs all day long and the streets are blocked off to traffic. One street--Calle 60--is closed from the center of town out to the Paseo de Montejo on the opposite side of town and people rent bicycles for just a few pesos to ride. Families gather to attend church at the beautiful cathedral and then spend the day shopping and enjoying the music.  We loved watching the beautiful dancers but were quite surprised at the grand finale:  dancing to a medley of Christmas Carols in English dressed in LasVegas style costumes.
