Theater in Merida

Tuesday night we attended a performance of the Ballet Yucatan Folclorico in a beautiful old theater in centro Merida. The theater was built in the early 1900's during the economic boom when sisal was shipped around the world to make rope. The dance reflected three periods of  Yucatan history: its early beginnings, the rise of the economy during the sisal boom, and a celebration of modern life.  We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed these dancers.  The state funds this program as a learning tool to keep their culture alive through dance and orchestra.  The price was right--free! Hopefully, we will attend a symphonic performance before we leave Merida.  These are held weekly in the same theater, but they have been on Christmas break. Please excuse some of the pictures as the theater was very dark.  I tried to download one of the videos to share but did not succeed.  Maybe when we return to Belton we can share these.

The building was really beautiful.  The size of the dome and chandelier cannot be seen in this picture.

The rest of the pictures were videos, and I can't download them on the blog. One young couple danced wonderfully.  Their mirror image performance had almost perfect timing.  The costumes were beautiful; some of the music was Mayan flute and drums which was sometimes shrill and haunting.  The later part of the performance included more modern music we all associate with Mexico.
